Five street photography titles for your bookshelf
Whether you are new to street or an old hand, here are a five must have street photography titles that deserve a place in your shelf.
1. Bystander: A History of Street Photography — Colin Westerbeck & Joel Meyerowitz
For many this is the definitive historical and theoretical survey of the genre. It offers a rich lineage from Atget to present-day practitioners with thoughtful commentary on ethics, aesthetics, and evolution. It is ideal for photographers who want a comprehensive grounding in street photography’s tradition and shifting boundaries.
2. Street Photography Now — Sophie Howarth & Stephen McLaren
A global snapshot of contemporary street photography featuring over 40 photographers. It’s less academic than Bystander but great for those looking for some visual inspiration.
3. Magnum Contact Sheets — Kristen Lubben
Not strictly a street photography book, but a masterclass in visual thinking. Contains 139 contact sheets, from 69 photographers. This book is invaluable for understanding decision making and the editing process.
4. The Americans — Robert Frank
Arguably the most influential photographic book of the 20th century and considered a seminal work in American photography and art history. Frank’s road trip through 1950s America is raw, poetic and political. A must have for anyone interested in narrative sequencing and using street photography to express a deeper social or emotional critique.
5. Exiles — Josef Koudelka
A haunting, lyrical exploration of displacement, solitude, and the outsider’s gaze. Koudelka’s compositions are masterful, often leaning toward the surreal or symbolic. A great addition for those photographers interested in the more philosophical possibilities of candid photography.
