Siegfried Hansen

Hamburg 2006

Siegfried Hansen has a background in graphic design which is apparent in his images. He uses line, angle, colour and geometry to create images from everyday locations that many would nor could ever perceive. The skill though developed from decades spent on the streets tirelessly checking left, right, front, and back. He looks for graphic connections and surreal situations and seldom are people the main component.

Hansen is a German street photographer who works mainly in cities rebuilt following the bombings of the second world war. This often provides him with a backdrop of concrete and steel which he exploits to the full. He uses leica Q series cameras and sticks with them, believing that understanding one camera intimately, and what the fixed lens is capable of, allows him freedom to concentrate on his art.

This image, Hamburg, 2006, is from his series Hold the Line, Hamburg 2006 and shows how his technique of using line, angle and colour produces an abstract graphic while the presence of the human figure provides an element of scale and place.
